Dr Gordon R Lewis, who founded EMNR in 1981-1984, passed into the presence of the Lord Jesus on Saturday, June 11. Following his involvement with the Lausanne Congress on World Evangelization, in 1981 Dr Lewis summoned Christian leaders to build a fledgling organization at that time called Evangelical Ministries to Cultists. In 1984, this ministry was formally organized and incorporated as Evangelical Ministries to New Religions (EMNR).
Dr Lewis served at Denver Seminary full-time as professor of Philosophy and Theology from 1958-1993, and taught as Senior Professor for about ten years after that. He was the author of many books, including Testing Christianity’s Truth Claims (1976), Confronting the Cults (1987), Integrative Theology (1994, 3 vols, co-authored with Bruce Demarest), Decide for Yourself, and What Everyone Needs to Know About Transcendental Mediation, which sold 1,000,000 copies.
Gordon was a kind, humble, gentle, and brilliant man, with a passion for the Gospel. In addition to founding EMNR, he served as President of the Evangelical Theological Society and the Evangelical Philosophical Society. He was deeply respected by all the board members and virtually everyone who knew him.
A memorial service is planned for the coming week in the metro-Denver area. His pastor and Dr Douglas Groothuis will offer words of comfort and celebration about his remarkable life and character. Please pray for his family, particularly his wife Willa. (Adopted from a Facebook post by Dr Groothuis.)
